Aeroponics:

Aeroponics systems are considered to be a more advanced hydroponic growing method. Aeroponics systems are capable of producing great results, but require more care, maintenance, and attention to detail than most other hydroponic gardening methods. In aeroponics, no grow medium is needed because the plants root systems are suspended in dark chambers where each is individually sprayed with nutrient solution. Many believe that plant roots absorb the maximum amount of nutrients possible in aeroponics systems.

The most unique aspect of aeroponics systems is that only the plants’ root systems are exposed to the nutrient solution. They are held in dark chambers to block out all light and are sprayed with nutrient rich solution at regular intervals. The nutrient solution is made up of plant nutrients and fertilizers dissolved in water, and has all of the nutrition plants need to grow. No dirt or grow medium is needed at all.

Aeroponics systems require more care and maintenance because the sprayers sometimes break, clog, or malfunction in other ways so they need to be replaced. Also, it is vital that the nutrient solution remains perfectly concentrated and pH balance because there is no buffer between the solution and the plant roots. If the solution is slightly off, it could easily damage the entire crop! Plant root systems are very sensitive, so care must be given when using an aeroponics system. However, many indoor gardeners believe this disadvantage also becomes an advantage because the roots will uptake the maximum amount of nutrients possible compared to any other hydroponics system. Those who take great care to maintain their nutrient solution will reap great rewards from aeroponics.

If you are an amateur grower, we recommend steering clear of aeroponics. However, if you have some experience and are confident in your ability to maintain proper nutrient and pH levels in your nutrient solution, try aeroponic – you could be very pleased with the results!
