Hydroponics vs Soil

Hydroponics is basically a soil-less gardening method. Hydroponics gardening has been used across the globe for efficient cultivation of plants and crops. With hydroponics, growers don’t need to worry about overwatering, fertilizers, pesticides, light, temperature, or many other things that traditional soil-based growers do. Hydroponics is very cost-effective because every aspect and input can be controlled. Much less water and nutrients are needed compared to soil-based growing. It’s also much more eco-friendly because no fertilizers or toxic pesticides and fungicides are needed. Hydroponics is also preferred because is results in much higher yields, and can be done virtually anywhere because there’s no need for soil.

Hydroponics has been very successful recently because of the quick and guaranteed good results that these systems produce. Unlike growing in soil, hydroponics can be done anywhere and anytime no matter what the weather or temperature is. You don’t have to dig or till soil to get started, or worry about your plants receiving enough sunlight or nutrients. With hydroponics, you can grow your favorite fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. any time. Hydroponics is much easier and does not require as much attention. Also, much less land and water is needed. For these reasons, hydroponics has been a very profitable enterprise for commercial growers. The high yields and controlled environments make hydroponics especially attractive to commercial and home-growers alike.

By comparison, soil cultivation requires much more time, money, and energy; especially when you compare the yields you can get over the same amount of time. Plants grown in soil require almost constant attention, and takes more time for maintenance and clean up, plus they often require toxic pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers. Common pests like white flies, leaf miners, pin worms, and root diseases are almost entirely avoided with hydroponics, because many diseases are soil-borne. This is an especially important point when comparing soil to hydroponics because there the demand for organically grown produce is increasing every year.

It’s no wonder that more and more farmers and growers are choosing controlled hydroponics systems over traditional soil-based growing. The high yields, year-round growing, and fast production make hydroponics much more attractive than soil. For any serious grower, hydroponics is definitely the way to grow!
